Cat Craft for Kids

So my wee one is freshly 5 years old, pre-kindergarten and I have been working with her to prepare her for school. This particular craft was actually a bit more on the advanced side for her except for the using scissors part. Regardless - this craft involves shape recognition (circle, triangle, rectangle), tracing, coloring, cutting, puzzling, and gluing all in one.
What we used:
# Safety Scissors
# Crayons
# Elmer's stick of glue
# Pencil
The first thing that I did was take a piece of paper and "dash" out the shapes that I wanted to use to piece the cat together. These shapes involved 1 circle (for the head), 2 smaller triangles (for the ears), 1 elongated triangle (for the tail), 1 large rectangle (for the body), and 4 smaller rectangles (for the legs). My wee one identified which shapes were which then traced all of these dashed shapes in order to understand how they are drawn.

I then allowed full free range of coloring so she was able to use which ever color scheme her heart desired. This portion could also easily include color recognition through color-coding, but I personally felt it was nice to allow my wee one more control of the project. The most gut-wrenching part for me was teaching her how to use scissors, but its a skill that does need to be learned. We did use safety scissors and I took this opportunity to teach her how to properly hold the scissors and paper, as well as how to watch the placement of her fingers. Of course it was a challenge for her little hands to cut right on the lines, but she did the best she could and it actually came out looking very nice!

Once we had all of our pieces colored and cut out, now was the time to puzzle them together. This was very fun for my wee one to do as she explored the body parts splayed out in front of her. Piece by piece, she created an animal right before her very eyes and this was probably one of the more exciting parts of the project for her. The messy part was a finalization to keep the cat together - the glue! We used a regular Elmer's glue stick to avoid as much mess as possible and to allow much quicker drying. It is only paper after all!

This also allowed for her to learn which sides the glue needed to go on in order for the colored sizes to remain on the top. She was so proud of her creation and it will also be used in a future project that will be mentioned here on this blog very soon!
