Animal Discovery - Jeroba

Jerboa (jer·boa)

Meet the Jerboa, the little jumping rodent indigenous in Northern Africa and Asia to Northern China. Depending on where exactly they live, they sport either large ears or small ears. Being nocturnal, their large ears aid in hearing in the dark and living in mostly desert climates, the overly large ears also help them remain cool.

Their tiny mouse-like bodies measure in at about 5 to 15 cm and weigh only a mere few ounces. Their tail is longer than their bodies and used for balance while on their hind kangaroo-like legs. The strong hind legs can leap them upwards at about 6-8 feet.

These little rodents are known foragers, scoping out vegetation and insects in the night. They are more often solitary animals that reside in burrows that reach about 5-8 feet underground during the heat of the day. Breeding usually happens 2-3 times per year and the creatures survive for about 6 years in the wild.

Their fur does provide camouflage, ranging in beige, yellows, and browns to match the color of the sand around them. The nose of a Jeroba has a flap of skin to keep out sand particles and the ears are lined with furs for the same reason.

Animal Discovery - Binturong

Binturong [bin-too r-awng, -ong]

The Binturong, also known as the "bearcat", has a face like a cat and a stride like a bear. It is said to smell like popcorn!

They are native to South and Southeast Asia, hiding out in the canopies in the tropical forests, preferring to hang out in thicker vegetation.

Many have kept the Binturong as pets, especially in Malaysia, which has contributed to their drastically decreasing numbers. Their ill, short tempers make them more incompatible as pets.

These bearcats sport shaggy, coarse fur that ranges from grey to black in color. Weighing in at an average of about 19 lbs, they support themselves on short, stocky legs.

From head to tail, they measure at about 90cm, and their tail alone measures about the same length as their body. Not only is their tail huge, it is also prehensile and very strong.

These creatures are omnivores with a seeming preference to vegetation. When they are ready to mate at about 2.5 years of age, the females will purr to attract a male. After carrying the babies for 3 months, they will give birth to adorable little babies that have their eyes closed. They will be weaned after about 6-8 weeks but in the mean time, they will spend their first bit of life hiding in their mother's fur.

I'm Not Okay

Possible trigger warning: depression

Are you okay?
It's perfectly acceptable if you are not. It's understandable if you can't say it out loud and it's difficult to not hide behind the forced smiles. I get it.

It's that feeling of your light burning out, when you convince yourself that you feel better when all you do is give but refuse to take. Sometimes it's okay to share lengths of your wicks and ignite one another in a brilliant flame of life.

But it's also okay to feel this way. The world may feel like this encapsulated plague of disaster, hideous darkness, and lurking demons of the night that are ready to swallow you hole. The suffocating feeling like you're being dragged to the depths of the ocean, your lungs collapsing, and the surface light can't reach you. Like the very hope that you held on to has been sucked from the crumbling pieces of your soul by this eternal black hole from the stratosphere... I know. And it's okay to acknowledge these feelings of dread and internal turmoil....

What isn't okay is lying to yourself about it. We have somehow come to this unstable relationships with one another through our evolution that we missed a key part of what makes us living beings. Empathy. We convince ourselves that we are just a burden if we so much as muster a whimper to another living being without realizing that most of the time, they get it. That same shadowy lurking demon haunts them too.

We try so desperately to sleep through the days because the night gives no rest and we suck ourselves into this routine of masquerades that we slowly start to forget who we were before all of this started....or even if we remember a normal life without it. It has become no stranger.

We push ourselves so far away we don't see those wanting to help, we convince ourselves they'll give up on us anyway. And with all of the pushing, eventually we leave them with no choice. Too often do we allow the days to drag on and melt into one another as if the weeks, months, and years plastered themselves on the pavement like ice cream on a scolding hot summer day...except it's bitter. The taste of those little joys in life fade. There becomes no receptive memories of good days. The shadow looms over us.

We forget that at any moment we can turn our faces towards another light and slowly, but surely reignite ourselves. This life is the only one we know, and the beauty of it around us turns into this decapitating horror show in a pessimistic sea of doubts. We question everything except where to reach.

The scariest truth is we really aren't alone. Don't divide yourselves anymore. We are capable of magnificent things and sometimes.... All we need is a light.

Please tell me that you are not okay.
Because I'm not either

But tomorrow, we can try again, even if things aren't magnificent right away, we can progress. We can accept the small victories. It's okay to feel proud. It's okay to try. Open up more to one another, the power of empathy and love can conquer the shadows that bind us in our cells.

Sometimes we need to hear those sounds on repeat of reassurance just to drown out the other voices screaming at us to keep us limp in the corner. Over and over again with tears in our eyes because we want to believe the words other's say of encouragement and acceptance. Clinging to every hooked letter of every formed word that reached through us in the darkness, we hear them. Repetitiveness helps fight through our own self abuse.

It's okay.

I want you to feel something, anything at all. Know you are not alone and others are here. It's okay. Take a stand and accept it, but also accept one another. It's okay.

Calm - App Review

*NOT Sponsored*
Here I am sharing this amazing app for mental health and meditation. I personally find this one as my favorite for many reasons and this one I plan on purchasing premium for.

Calm has quite a few features that have helped me re-center myself and even push through suicidal thoughts and anxiety. It offers different "scenes" that are animated in the app and are very calm and relaxing accompanied with noises of the animated image (such as thunderstorm, fireplace, waterfalls, etc.).

The sounds can be toggled to remain on even outside of the app.
The meditation circle has helped me tremendously to refocus and calm my nerves. I can set the seconds on inhale and exhale and it gives something to focus on to force myself into a meditative state of clear mind.

It even reads stories aloud for sleep time! There is relaxing music libraries and the stories have libraries too! Reminder alerts have helped to keep me on track too. I highly recommend this app and think it's honestly beneficial to everyone, not just those with mental illnesses

Animal Discovery - Pudu

ANIMAL DISCOVERY!
Say hello to the smallest species of deer in the world known as the PudΓΊ!

There are two known species; the Northern species is found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru while the Southern species can be found in southern Chile and south-western Argentina. Fully grown, they are about 15 inches high and only weigh around 19 - 33 pounds

They are most often found in highlands and their stocky build aids to shroud them in overgrowth. They survive on vegetation and fruits and it is crucial that they limit time in direct sunlight thus they are crepuscular - only coming out in late evening and early morning. Southern Pudus are known to have a more reddish tint to their fur while their Northern brethren fare a bit darker in coloration.

The males are known to grow short horns that have the appearance of spikes, ranging up to a mere 4 inches. These tiny Bambi's are solitary and secretive. They are also known to be easily startled, tufting up their fur, barking, and shivering. The longest recorded life-span of the Pudu is 15 years and 9 months. It is also rumored that they could perish of a cardiac arrest when startled.

Pudus are easy targets of prey to the horned owl, cougars, and foxes. Though their tiny bodies may lead one to believe otherwise, they are efficient swimmers, climbers, sprinters, and jumpers and when it comes to escaping predators they dash off in zig-zag patterns. These deer are currently sitting as Near Threatened on the ICNU list due to declining habitat.

The Story of the Raven and the Hare

This is an old story about the Goddess Ostara. It can also be told as a pourquoi story - an origin of Easter, or the origin of Spring. Its a wonderful children's story and can easily be adapted to any religion or no religion at all! A little back story for those interested, Ostara is a neo-pagan holiday to celebrate the first calendar day of Spring. Another term often used to describe each of the 8 holidays on the wheel is "sabbat". Sabbats are known as the evenly spaced intervals throughout the year that signal the changes of weather. Not only are these seen in neo-pagan history, but can also be found mentioned in Farmer's Almanacs!

A Little More Personal Touch

I am all for supporting local business and entrepreneurs. Enough so that my Facebook tends to fill up quickly with liked pages and groups - as well as a magnificent timeline filled with beautiful creations. It's quite a nice break between the screaming politics and arguing religious posts. As humans, we are designed with this incredible mind and ability to build and create. To see this gift harnassed in the hands of those I admire well, that is something pretty special.

This post's purpose is to allow you to take a peek at what my timeline looks like. Creations. Art. Brilliance.

Chainmaille
Chainmaille is something we all may have heard about from school textbooks. It is exactly as it sounds: rings of chains connected to one another to form a piece of  "mesh". I did not realize this became a full-blown art form until I was awe-struck recently.

KitnMaille:
These pieces each came out so creatively and thought out.

This creator comes up with particular handmade chainmail headdresses, dragons, jewelry, decor, and more.

Mental Health is Not a Competition

I have been wanting to talk about this for a while from consideration of conversations I have had regarding anxiety and mental illness...
